Age is Just a State of Mind

You don’t stop moving because you get old. You get old because you stop moving.
In light of my grandad having survived another heart attack and going right back out there like no man’s business, I would like to stress the importance of mindset and the fact that age really can be just a number and a state of mind.

Last week I was at the gym doing my thing as I do and I noticed an old lady behind me, actually doing a similar workout (except with less weight). She was KILLING IT! It was obvious she was pushing her limits and really going for it. And I don’t mean a treadmill or a bike or any other cardio machine – No she was out there with the weights – And the press-ups!

Here come the feels though – As I was finishing with my session she came over and said “Hey, I don’t know how you do it, you’re so small but so strong! How old are you?” And I looked at her not quite sure how to respond to this? “I don’t know how YOU do it, how old are YOU?” I managed to ask eventually. Well, she is 83. 83 guys and out there lifting weights not giving a fuck about the number and just being awesome and doing what she wants to do.

Later in the week I attended a gym class that this amazing lady was also attending. I was running late so you know what she did? She ran and helped me set up my weights. I feel like if she was on a bus she would get up and offer her seat to the young rather than the other way around!

Back to my grandad – He actually lived an incredible life of adventure, being a mountain guide and a very enthusiastic traveler, he traveled most of the world and climbed more mountains than he can remember. Having had a heart attack and a complex heart surgery, his doctor sat him down and said: “You will have to take it a bit easier now. Short, slow, 15 minute walks then sit down and take a rest.”

So here’s my grandad, taking a walk. With a foldable chair in his backpack. So he can sit down and take a breather after 15 minutes. Before he continues his journey. I’m not sure that’s what the doctors had in mind.

Don’t let anything stop you and here’s a shoutout to Frida, an inspiration at the gym and my grandad, an inspiration in life.

P.S. – going to try get a selfie with this amazing lady – wish me luck!
